Our proposals for a new use of an existing Grade II listed gas holder at Kings Cross, London was the creation of a series of linked spaces.
Viewed from Kings Cross station, a shimmering silver disc appears to hover above a clearing of birch trees. The disc is framed by the silhouette of the historic gasholder and sits above a brightly illuminated glass floor stage, its convex mirrored surface reflecting and distorting movement below. It is afternoon and children from the neighbouring primary school chase puddles of light that spiral around the stage floor. A tennis court, a grid of hopscotch and a slowly moving line are displayed on the stage from a large LED screen in the floor. This area of creative play reacts to the quantity of visitors to the space and the time of day and shadows lengthen-omit to shorten.
