Tove Jansson (1914-2001), Dulwich Picture Gallery

Nissen Richards were appointed as 3D and 2D designer for this exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. This is the first major UK restrospective of the illustrator’s work, which draws on Jansson’s wider outputs of graphic illustration and painting, as well as her internationally renowned Moomin characters.

We incorporated some of her illustrations and characters into our graphic design that lead the visitor through the exhibition spaces. Using Tove Jansson’s beautiful scenic illustrations, we created a large-scale graphic wallpaper to immerse the visitor in the fantastical world of the Moomins. We also created a space at the centre of the exhibition where the visitors can sit and reflect - using lighting techniques to cast shadows of trees we produced a magical forest-like environment. Some of her characters ‘escaped’ the exhibition and we incorporated some illustrations in some of the other galleries as wayfinding to the special exhibition. We used bold colours to denote periods of her work throughout, and to compliment the style and content of her work.
