New brand, identity system and website for iconic music venue in Cardiff

Branding

Nissen Richards Studio has designed a new brand, identity system and website for iconic Cardiff music venue and bastion of Welsh culture Clwb Ifor Bach. Clwb Ifor Bach first opened in 1983 as a Welsh language social club. It has since become a live music institution, staging gigs by bands like Stereophonics and Super Furry Animals.

The concept for the new identity design arose out of the tri-partite plan for the site, with the new logomark representing a vertical, extruded re-telling of the new building configuration – whilst also referencing sound bars and reflecting the venue’s musical heart. This triple dynamism is also reflected in the new Clwb Ifor Bach logotype, which uses a combination of different weights of a primary brand typeface to convey the idea of movement and music and has been created in two versions, landscape and portrait. The final element of the identity is texture, inspired by the surfaces of the building itself and especially the rough surface texture of brick. Brick inspired the bold orange of the colourway, though the logo can also be applied in black and white.
